Like most contests, ours offers multiple categories to compete in.

However, for obvious reasons, categories can't run on and on indefinitely - you couldn't have 50, for example!

So our categories take in the so-called "big ones" that all the so-called sub-genres are naturally woven in to.

The feature film categories you can compete in are:

  1. Action & Thriller
  2. Comedy
  3. Drama
  4. Family & Animation
  5. Horror
  6. Lo-Budget
  7. Sci-Fi & Fantasy

But what if you've written a Musical Biopic? Or a Dramedy? Or an Action-Comedy?

Well, nobody knows your project better than you.

You have to decide, based on a balancing exercise, which "main" genre the sub-genre your project's operating in, should slot in to.

For this balancing exercise you might ask yourself questions such as:

  • Does the non-comedy in my script overpower the comedy? Which is more prevalent?
  • Broadly speaking, what is the history of my sub-genre? ie if I've written a musical biopic, well, the history of these films is that they're largely dramas, primarily.
  • What is the best category for my project to compete in? ie. if it's really low-budget and it's an Action or Thriller piece, it might be smart to compete in the Low-budget category where competition - simply by definition - is lower.
  • Further to this, what is your script's super-strength? Is it the drama, or the comedy? Be ruthless with yourself: what has this script got over all the others.
  • Ultimately try and be impartial, maybe like a judge or jury. Look calmly at all the evidence for, all the evidence against, and then make your decision.

Ultimately we can't really assist further than this: we don't know your project as well as you do, only you can decide which "core" genre it slots in to.
