Firstly, script proofing and polishing is not script doctoring.

It is a surface-level only service which purely affects the following:

  • formatting
  • spelling
  • punctuation
  • grammar
  • indentation and use of white space
  • use or over-use of scene description
  • formatting of scene description
  • scene headings

It does not affect:

  • character
  • motivation
  • plot
  • narrative
  • colloquialisms (ie the conversion of US phrases to UK phrases, or vice versa)
  • dialogue

Essentially, the service exists to take quote-unquote "messily formatted" scripts, and format them to an industry-standard level whereby they'll then present a "smooth read" to the industry figure reading it.

The service does not affect anything creative or narrative-based at all - it does not affect the plot, the story, the characters or What Actually Happens.

It also doesn't affect interpretation wherever humanly possible: we can't take your script that features the UK-centric quips and banter of a UK character and convert that same character's dialogue to a guy from Missouri.

It's the most surface of surface level services and is ideally suited to clients where English isn't their first language, or who haven't written their script using professional screenwriting software.

Script doctoring, however, does affect every area of the script potentially. You can read more about our doctoring process, here > https://industrialscripts.com/script-doctor/
